Parallel Structure
Parallelism in writing means that similar parts in a sentence (2 or more) must have the same structure.

All similar parts are balanced.

Using parallel structures makes your writing clearer and smoother .

Examples:
- Easy come, easy go
- I came,I saw, I conquered.
- To err is human; to forgive divine.
Active Voice
- Voice: characteristic of an action verb that indicates whether the subject is performing or receiving the action.
- Active voice: subject performs the action
- Passive voice :subject receives the action
Active voice | Passive Voice |
Raymond hit the baseball. | The baseball was hit by Raymond. |
Ernest Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea. | The Old Man and the Sea was written by Ernest Hemingway. |
The whole class passed the exam. | The exam was passed by the whole class. |
Clauses
- Clause: A group of words with a subject and a verb.
- Independent Clause: can stand alone as a complete sentence.
- Dependent Clause: has to be connected to a sentence
Dependent clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions. Look at he partial list below
Sometimes clause are used as a single part of speech.
- Noun Clause:Whoever ate the last piece of cake owes me.
- Adjective Clause:The phone that someone left in the cafeteria was broken.
- Adverb Clause :She cheered because her brother won the award.
