letter e with flowers

Spanish 1 - MLA 341-342

August 3: We discussed the open house letter in class today, emphasizing class rules, especially
that phones are required to be in the "safety zone" at the front of the room from bell to bell and
headphones/earbuds are not to be seen at all during the school day. We discussed a change in
grading policy that has been put in place by the county. Where it says 70/30 on the open house
letter, it will be 60/40. We discussed what you will see on this website and Google Classroom.
Please make sure you join the Google Classroom for your class period, the Remind for Spanish
1 and Quizlet for Spanish 1. The code or link for all three of those is available on the home page
  of this site.

August 4: We filled out a survey in English that we will eventually use to make conversations
with in Spanish. Please keep these surveys in your notebook. You are asked to keep a 3 ring
binder notebook with the following sections: Vocabulary/Verbs, Notes, Practice (which will
include plenty of paper for practice assignments). We also looked at a short slide presentation
focusing on words we can readily recognize right now in Spanish - cognates and words that
have recognizable patterns. Please join Google Classroom for Spanish 1 6th period, Remind for
Spanish 1 and Quizlet Spanish 1. Use codes and links from the home page on this site.

August 7: We started discussing the Spanish alphabet today. Make sure you review the notes
we took during class. There will be a quiz over this information soon. Notes will also be available
on Google Classroom, but remember you must have those notes available in your notebook as
well in order to complete class activities.

August 8: We continued working with the Spanish alphabet and the sounds of the Spanish
letters. We also started to experiment with spelling words by listening.

August 9: We continued practicing spelling by hearing after reviewing all of the information we
we have discussed this week. Notes are on GC. We will have a quiz over the alphabet and the
sounds the letters make on Friday. Please study this information right away.

August 10: We reviewed the alphabet and letters sounds again and practiced with example
questions for the quiz tomorrow. We continued practicing spelling by hearing.

August 11: We took a quiz over the alphabet and the facts we have been discussing this whole
week. We continued working with the C and G chart that we learned yesterday. We will have a
  quiz over that next.

August 14: We practiced the C and G chart syllables and copied the list of the English syllables
which will be on the quiz on Thursday. Make sure you study how I will spell the English and
what Spanish syllable will correspond. You can also study this on the C and G Chart Quizlet
set on the app and on the Quiz assignment on GC. We also continued to practice spelling by
listening. All of these concepts are meant to help us interpret Spanish words better and to have
a much easier time learning, writing and speaking with our vocabulary words.

August 15: We paired up and practiced the syllables on the C and G chart. We will have a quiz
over that tomorrow. Please be prepared. There are no re-takes on quizzes. We also practiced
  spelling by hearing.

August 16: We took our quiz over the C and G chart today. We continued to practice spelling
by hearing using individual white boards.

August 17: We practiced a lot with finding and hearing the stress of Spanish words. We used
random words listed on the board and then we practiced those concepts through listening.

August 18: We practiced spelling and finding stress by listening and using words from our
actual vocabulary soon to come this year. We will be taking a test over all these concepts next
week, as well as learning some conversational questions and answers and greetings and
salutations. This will be our first vocabulary.

August 21: We discussed EXACTLY how the test will be presented on Wednesday. On three
answers you only will mark the stress you hear on the word, either with an underline or an
accent mark. (Must know stress rules!) On three answers you will only fix one spelling error in
the given word on the board by listening to how the word is pronounced. (Must know sounds of
letters in Spanish and the sounds on C and G chart!) For the last four answers, you will have to
spell by listening and show the stress either with an underline or accent mark. We practiced
  doing each of these tasks.

August 22: We practiced each of the tasks for the test tomorrow again. Make sure you know
your alphabet sounds, the syllables and sounds for C and G chart AND your stress rules. We
also started working with some of our first vocabulary.

August 23: We took our test over phonetics today. We started our first vocabulary list that
includes the things we learned yesterday. We will have quizzes over this list, so start studying
  this vocabulary now.

August 24: We continued with our vocabulary today. Please start studying these words right
away. We will have a lot of vocabulary quizzes starting next Monday. See GC for the dates
and what set to study for each date. Study sets are on Quizlet and GC, but make sure you
have joined my Quizlet class through the link on my website to be able to access those
study sets. You will need to learn 10 things a night for a while, so start right away. There will
be 6 sets in all and 6 quizzes starting Monday.

August 25: We finished our definitions for the first two sections of the Greetings and Salutations
vocabulary. We will have a quiz over set 1 on Monday, see GC for all the details about how the
quiz will be presented and what to study. Quizlet sets to study with are on the app and on GC
under the quiz assignment. After that we started practicing with some of the questions and
  answers for conversation.

August 28: We studied for five minutes and then took our vocabulary quiz over Greetings and
Salutations 1. We started practicing with asking and answering basic conversational questions
with each other. We started writing a framework for a conversation we will practice tomorrow.        Don't forget that we will have a quiz over Greetings and Salutations 2 on Wednesday. Use
Quizlet to study. See GC for details.

August 29: We went over what will be on the quiz tomorrow. Study Greetings and Salutations
set 2. The quiz format will be the same. ALL OR NOTHING...must be exact. We used the
conversation framework we started yesterday to speak with each other today. Everyone will
get a chance to practice that and we will be adding to it as well. Study for your quiz with
Quizlet. See GC for details. Make sure you are on Remind, Spanish 1 Quizlet and Google
  Classroom.

August 30: We studied for five minutes to get centered and then took our quiz over Greetings and
Salutations set 2. We practiced a few more conversations. Then we started copying Greetings
  and Salutations set 3.

August 31: We continued copying and discussing the next two sets of our vocabulary. Quizzes
will be next Wednesday (set 3 41-60) and Friday (set 4 61-80). Please start studying this
  vocabulary right away.

September 1: We finished defining and discussing set 4 of the vocabulary. Your quiz on set 3 is
next Wednesday, Sept 6 and set 4 will be Friday, Sept 8.

September 5: We reviewed vocabulary together. Quiz tomorrow on Greetings and Salutations set 3. See GC for
details. We also started discussing our new unit on Spanish-speaking countries.

September 6: We studied for a few minutes and then took our quiz over Greetings and Salutations 3. We will have
a quiz over set 4 on Friday. See GC for details. Sets available on Quizlet app and on GC, but you need a free
account established to click through and use the whole set from GC. We continued exploring where Spanish-
speaking countries are in the world.

September 7: We reviewed vocabulary first. Remember we have a quiz tomorrow over Greetings and Salutations
set 4. After vocab review, we continued with exploring the different countries that speak Spanish. We started
yesterday with Spain and we finished that today and moved on to Mexico.

September 8: We studied for a couple minutes to get focused and then took our quiz over Greetings and Salutations
set 4. We continued discussing Spanish-speaking countries.

September 11: We continued with our countries, capitals and facts. We covered Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
The slides we used are on GC.

September 12: We continued with our countries, capitals and facts. The slides are on GC. We did El Salvador,
  Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

September 13: We continued with our countries, capitals and facts. The slides will be on GC. We did Panamá,
  Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.

September 14: We continued with our countries, capitals and facts. The slides are now on GC. We did Bolivia, Perú
  Paraguay and Chile.

September 15: We continued with our countries, capitals and facts. We also now have a practice map with every
country listed that you will be responsible for on the summative test and two practice maps that will be exactly the
same as the test except for the number order. Make sure you are studying in the way that you will be tested,
and YES, spelling counts! You must spell the country and the capital correctly to get credit.

September 18: We finished going over the countries, capitals and facts. We used the maps we were given to fill out
the practice test maps today and study for the tests on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Map one will be the
test on Wednesday and map 2 on Thursday. Spelling of the countries and capitals counts as all or nothing. You
must also be able to write one fact about each country. The order in which the countries are placed on the practice
maps WILL NOT be the same order on the test. You must actually know where the countries are.

September 19: Today we practiced with a Kahoot to review the countries and capitals. We will have the test over
MAP 1 tomorrow. This includes Mexico, Central American countries (6) and the three Caribbean islands. Must be
able to spell the Spanish version of the country name and capital name CORRECTLY and be able to write one
fact from the slides we used in class. Those slides are on GC under the test assignment. We will have a test over
  MAP 2. on Thursday.

September 20: We studied for a few minutes to get centered and then took the test over Map 1, which included 10
countries, capitals and one fact for each of the slides we used in class. Those slides are on GC under the test
assignment. We will have our second test tomorrow over countries in South America, Spain and Guinea Ecuatorial.
You must spell the countries and capitals CORRECTLY in Spanish, not the English version of their names. So, if
you write Spain instead of España, it will be wrong. Prepare in the correct way. These requirements have been
mentioned each day since we started this on September 5th. See GC for details about the test and other studying
resources, including two different practice test maps.

September 21: We studied for a few minutes to get centered and then took the test over Map 2, which included 11
countries, capitals and one fact from each slide we used in class. After the test, we began copying our next two
groups of vocabulary - Greetings and Salutations, set 5 and 6. Those quizzes will be next Tuesday and Thursday.
  See GC for details.

list. Please be ready for those quizzes next Tuesday and Thursday. See GC for details. Quizlet sets are available
on Quizlet and GC. After we finished the vocabulary, we practiced with saying dates using some of our new words.

September 25: We reviewed our two new sets of vocabulary, Greetings and Salutations sets 5 and 6, including
songs for days of the week and months of the year. We will have a quiz over set 5 tomorrow and set 6 on
Thursday. We also started an organized list of questions and answers that we have learned in our vocabulary so
far to be kept in your notebook for conversation practice.

Salutations 5. We will have set 6 on Thursday. After the quiz we continued with our questions and answers that
  we started yesterday.

Quizlet flashcards and the song we learned the other day. We copied the numbers from 20-100 by tens and then
discussed how to make the in-between numbers. We will have a quiz over those numbers next Monday. We
practiced with the questions and answers we already have on our list, which came from earlier vocabulary, and
we added some new ones that come from the current vocabulary lists. Please make sure you prepare for the
quiz tomorrow on Greetings and Salutations, Set 6.

a new vocabulary list next week. We practiced making dates using our birthdays, and added that question to our
  "Preguntas y contestas" list.

September 29: We copied the numbers for the hundreds, thousand and million. We discussed how to make the
numbers in between and then practiced with some. We will have a quiz on Monday over 10-100 by tens,
including both words for 100. We will have a quiz on Wednesday over the other hundreds, thousand and million.
We practiced using our "preguntas y contestas" after that.

verbs. We will finish the third set tomorrow. Quizzes are next week: Mon, Weds, Fri. See GC for details.

February 2: We finished the verb list and took notes on how to conjugate all verbs in Spanish. This is what we will
do for the rest of the year. It's important that you know this material. Please review and study these notes and the
review verbs. Set one quiz is Monday.

February 5: We studied for a couple minutes for focus and then we took our vocabulary quiz over Review Verbs,
set 1. We will have quizzes over set 2 on Wednesday and set 3 on Friday. See GC and Quizlet for the sets. We

  some conjugations on a worksheet.

conjugation and making the subject and verb agree. We will have a test next Wednesday over conjugating verbs
and making them match the subject. See test assignment on GC for details.

February 20: We had a choice of how to prepare for our test tomorrow. You could study on your own online using
one of the following: studyspanish.com verb drills, the Kahoots linked on our Google Classroom or Quizlet to make
sure you know your verbs. Another choice was to work with individual white boards to practice with examples
given of subjects and verbs. We will have our test over conjugation tomorrow. See GC for what is required.

chart of verb endings for AR, ER and IR.

morning yesterday, so we did not have the full period to finish our test.

March 27: We started notes on irregular yo verbs and stem-changing verbs. We have already had some of these
on our verb charts, so this is just more explanation on them, and we will focus more on them. We also copied a
list of verbs with irregularities that we will have quizzes on next week. We will define them tomorrow.

March 28: We reviewed the notes we took yesterday on stem-changing verbs. We took notes on groups of
irregular yo verbs and defined the list of verbs with irregularities that we copied yesterday. We will have a quiz

  verbs.

April 22: We practiced stem-changing verbs on Quizizz today.

April 23: We practiced one more day before our test with stem-changes and irregular yo verbs. Every irregular yo
verb will be on the test. You have to know how it is spelled and what it means in English. Every stem-changing
verb we have will be on the test. You have to know what the whole verb is, what the stem changes to, if it is a boot
or ankle boot verb and how to conjugate it that way to match a given subject. Make sure you know all of this for
the test tomorrow. Additionally there will be a question writing section with one sentence to ask questions about.

April 24: We took a test over the irregular yo verbs and the stem changing verbs today.

April 25: We did an exploratory activity trying to put two verbs together in the same phrase. After that we checked
how accurate those answers were and took notes over how to make infinitive phrases. Most everyone was on the
right track before we took notes. We will finish notes tomorrow.

April 26: We finished our notes on infinitive phrases. We will have a quiz next Tuesday over the 15 phrases in our
notes. The others listed on the Quizlet set are bonus. We practiced using those phrases by sharing sentences we
  created with some of them.

April 29: We worked on an activity that organized our infinitive phrases from our notes into groups that need a
certain word in the middle of the two verbs and those that don't. The activity also included practice sentences
using each of the infinitive phrases from your notes. We will have a quiz tomorrow over those 15 phrases. There
are two bonus phrases on the Quizlet set. Anyone absent due to testing, be ready to take that quiz as soon as
you return to class. Being in testing will NOT be an excuse for not knowing these phrases when you come back.
