Here are the list of awards for CyberStart America participants. Those of you who reached 20,000 points should be receiving an e-mail on FRIDAY inviting you to apply for the scholarships and awards. I will make time in class for you to do this! Read through the whole page because many of you will qualify in more than one category. There are awards for Cyber Patriot, pico, WiCyS, etc.
Due:
Look at the attached email and determine which of the rules below are being violated. Create a document and indicate by number which of the Professional Email Guideline rules are being violated. Next, edit the emails to make them more professional. You may work together, but everyone should submit something to Google classroom.
Professional Email Guidelines:
1. Include a one or two word topic in the subject line. It helps the reader know what the email is all about.
2. Always include a greeting (Dear) and a closing (Sincerely). Always!
3. Use business language, always spell check, reread and do not use abbreviations.
4. Use formatting just as you would a business letter.
5. Do not ever use ALL CAPS. ALL CAPS MEANS YOU ARE SCREAMING AT THE OTHER PERSON.
6. Jokes, witty remarks and sarcasm do not translate in email. This can get you into really, difficult situations.
7. Complaining and gossiping have no place in email.
8. Keep the communication short and concise.
9. The use of emoticons should only be used between really great friends.
10. Reread before hitting send.
11. If you can walk around the office and talk to someone, send the email later. Get up and talk to a colleague. Send an email when there is factual information they may need.
12. Never forward a forward a forward.

Now that you have programmed your Ozobot to circle the racetrack and navigate the obstacle course, your final challenge is to have them compete head to head in an Olympic-style curling challenge. You will compete against your classmates on Thursday to get the most points. Your goal will be to get as close as possible to the center "button" using whatever programming method you choose for the robot. You must launch your robot from the hog line and you may not touch it once it has been released!
Due:
When you get your final Ozobot program you will use in the Curling challenge, copy the SHARE link and post the link here as your submission.

For those of you who have completed at least level 2 in Moonbase on CyberStart, here is a different approach to learning Python. Please complete these 18 lessons to earn your certificate. Sign in with Google!!
Due:
When you have successfully completed the Code Combat programming, see me to sign out an Ozobot and work on the slot car challange.
Due:
Today I'm going to be asking you to program my Ozobots (if you have finished the python coding on CyberStart and Code Combat). First you will need to complete the slotcar challenge if you haven't already done so on Tuesday. To do this, pick up an Ozobot, a laminated blue instruction sheet, and a racetrack from me and begin programming your Ozobot using the ozoblockly website. I would like to see your bot successfully complete the task before you move on to the next step.
Once you successfully complete the racetrack, you are ready to teach the Ozobot how to navigate through a set of obstacles set up at the front of the room using the sensor functions.

Due:
Continue to work on the CSS fonts in Khan Academy to get to the Blog Project. Expect a quiz over this material when I get back.
Due:
I will be out again today, so if you are somewhere without a computer, work on this soft skill exercise. Instead of typing it out just use notebook paper to complete it. Don't worry if you do not have a lot of things to write down. This is a good thinking exercise for you to go through, especially if you plan to apply for work-based learning or college. You can see what types of things you need to work on.
Due:
This will be the next graded task. Please continue to work through to this one. If you need assistance, Jeffery can help guide you.
Due:
If you have completed the Recipe Book project below, then you may choose between continuing with the Khan Academy lessons or working on Cyber Start today. I would like to get the people who are behind caught up.
Due:
Use the tags you've learned last week to create a travel website on Khan Academy. Make sure you are logged in and click on the "I'm done" button and the "Spin-off" button to make sure you save your work. I will grade this based on the rubric / checklist on Khan Academy so make sure you include all of the elements they require.
If you were absent or haven't completed the previous lessons, you may go back to re-watch any lessons you have forgotten.

Due:
Over the next few weeks we are going to explore HTML, CSS, and JS coding for websites. You have already been exposed to this through CyberStart when you used the Developer Tools (F12) to look for hidden messages or broken links. Now we're going to find out what some of the tags mean and how you can use them to design a web page. I do not expect you to become expert programmers, but I will expect that you understand some of the basic usage of HTML. I will begin giving you quizzes over the material , so it is important that you keep up and actually do the exercises.
Highlights from the first lessons:
is a required field at the top of all modern HTML documents. If it is missing, the computer won't know what to do.
need to be the second and last tags on your document
anything between these tags are for page rendering and are "invisible" to users
all visible text must appear between these tags
is the LARGEST heading tag
normal text should be placed between paragraph tags
is a line break and does not require an end tag To complete the Challenge you need to add a headline, a paragraph, and two lines of text. If the green "Oh noes" bubble character comes up, read the brown text and complete the actions listed. You will know you are done when the yellow "Pokemon"-like character says "Congratulations" and awards you points.

Today you're going to benchmark your computer build by testing it using Game Debate's benchmarking program. This is a very simple process. Just click on the link and choose a game you enjoy playing or one that is popular and fill in the CPU, GPU (graphics card), and RAM specifications from your build. If you don't find an exact match for something, try to pick another item in the same series family. Note any "bottlenecks" or system conflicts. Take a screenshot of your printout, paste it in a document, and upload it to Google Classroom. Do this for 3 - 5 games to see how your system performs. If you don't know a game to try, look at the list of 100 Most Demanding PC Games and pick a few from there.
Due:
Read the articles below and answer the Quia quiz questions in the related links.
Due:
When you have submitted your final project to Flipgrid, begin reviewing your peers' builds using the attached rubric. Watch the entire presentation. When you finish, make TWO separate posts in the comments section on the Flipgrid page. One comment should be positive and tell the person something you liked about the build. The second comment should be CONSTRUCTIVE. In this comment you should discuss some area of the build that could be improved. All comments should be complete sentences. You may not make "fluff" comments like: Great build! Awesome job! Your comments should be reflective of what you have learned about computers this quarter and demonstrate insight on your part. You must comment on at least 10 builds to get all the points for the rubric. Keep track of whose builds you comment on. You may use the rubric link below OR the paper rubric I give you in class, but you must turn in a completed sheet for the assignment.
Due:
Use the link below to post your presentation of your computer build project. I would like to have them all on Flipgrid by Wednesday so we can do a gallery walk on Thursday.

Before we begin looking at computer hardware, we need to have a basic understanding of the binary number system. Every instruction a computer carries out is done in binary. Binary, or base 2, is a number system that only has two values: 0 and 1. A computer registers them as either "on" or "off" with 1 = on and 0 = off.
Vocabulary:
In computer lingo, a single number is called a "bit": 0 or 1
A group of four numbers is called a "nibble": 0011 or 1001 or 0101 etc.
A group of eight numbers is called a "byte": 10101010 or 01010101 etc.
If you are absent from class today, please watch the video below.

Happy Friday! Congratulations on being the class with the most students done with the Ubuntu image! When I reviewed the submissions last night it looked like about half the class was completely done with the image. I would like for you to work with the other half of the class to get them over the finish line as well. If you are having trouble, please let your classmates know so they can assist you. Overall, you guys are doing a fantastic job, and even better than my intermediate classes in some cases! Keep up the good work!!
When you guys get done with the image, go ahead and hit the Quizizz review I posted yesterday. I plan to give you guys a short assessment on Monday, so email me with any questions you have. Have a great weekend!

I am interested in starting student chapters for two professional Computer Industry (specifically Cybersecurity) organizations: Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) and the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals (ICMCP). As the names imply, they are specifically designed to connect and assist professionals who are women or who identify as minorities. WiCyS already has a student chapter process set up, we would just need to apply. ICMCP does not; however, if there is interest, I will coordinate with the Atlanta chapter to see if we can be an affiliate. Both organizations offer scholarships and mentor programs for students who are serious candidates to enter the computer industry. This would also be a great opportunity for those of you looking to get a leadership position for a college resume since we will need to develop a charter and appoint officers.
If you are interested in being a member of either of these organizations, please respond to this post.

Working alone or with a partner, create a cartoon using a program like Google Slides or Power Point demonstrating ONE of the commandments being violated in the classroom. Post your work to share with the class.
Extension activity - watch the TEDTalk and briefly comment on how the ideas he spoke about in 2014 are being reflected in society today.

Please use this review game to check your knowledge of the tasks you have been completing using the Cyber Patriot images. I will give you a quiz on this material on MONDAY.
If you have NOT completed the previous assignments, please do so and post your answers / score reports in Google Classroom.
If you need help, ask the peer facilitator in your class (or a more experienced student). If you need my assistance, email me the specific nature of your problem so I can create a video or solve your problem in another way.

I will need to leave early today and will be out with a sick child for most of the week. I have put the Ubuntu Exhibition Round image on your desktop. It is in the Zip file called cpiv_exrd2_se_ubu16.zip. You will need to EXTRACT this folder exactly the same way as you did the last one. Double click on it, choose EXTRACT, EXTRACT ALL, EXTRACT through the three menus. The password is in the Power Point slide below. The Unique Identifier is also in this slide.
When you get the image open, this will be different than Windows. Many of the functions are command line driven, so it will take a little getting used to. Read the READ ME file just like before and follow the instructions. At the end of the README file there is a link to the answer key. If you get stuck, you may open the answer key to see how to do tasks. The slides below also explain what you are doing. At the end, I will want you to upload a screen shot of your score report to verify you have done everything. DO NOT GIVE UP!!!
IF THERE IS AN EXPERIENCED LINUX USER IN THE GROUP, PLEASE SPEAK UP AND HELP YOUR CLASSMATES GET THROUGH THE IMAGE.
